Every rainy season the same thing happens in our part of Quezon City: a big storm passes, and for a day or two the tap water comes through cloudy, sometimes with a smell. The utility usually sorts it out, and usually it is fine. But “usually” is not a word I want to gamble my children’s stomachs on. So the first thing I pack every year is a Sawyer Squeeze, and it has never once let me down.

At around ₱1,400, the Sawyer Squeeze is the best value in emergency water anywhere in this kit. It needs no power, no waiting, and no consumables beyond the odd back-flush. Buy one, learn to use it before you need it, and it will outlast every other item in your go-bag.
Why this filter
It is a hollow-fibre filter rated to 0.1 microns, which in plain terms means it strains out the bacteria and protozoa that cause the misery — the E. coli, the giardia, the things that turn a hard week into a hospital trip. You fill the pouch from the tap, a rain barrel or a clean-looking stream, screw the filter on, and squeeze. Clean water comes out the other end straight away. No boiling, no twenty-minute wait for tablets, no kerosene smell in the water.
What sells it for me is how little it asks of you. There are no batteries to go flat at the worst moment and no cartridge to expire in a drawer. A quick back-flush with the little syringe it comes with, and the flow is as good as new. I keep one in the go-bag and a second by the kitchen sink for those cloudy-tap days.
Who this is for
Anyone whose mains water gets unreliable after a storm — which, on the flood-prone side of the city, is most of us. It is also the right first filter for a new prepper: cheap enough to buy without agonising, simple enough that the whole family can use it.
Who this is NOT for
It does not remove viruses, and it does not make salt water or chemically contaminated water safe. If your only source is a river downstream of industry, this is not enough on its own. And it must not be allowed to freeze — not a real worry here, but worth saying for anyone carrying it up a cold mountain.
Tested conditions
Used at home through three wet seasons on cloudy tap water, and in the field on rainwater collected off a roof and from a spring in Rizal. Back-flushed perhaps a dozen times; still flowing like new.
Where to buy
Lazada and Shopee both carry it, but stick to sellers with a long review history — counterfeit Sawyers exist, and a fake filter is worse than none because you will trust it. The genuine article has clean moulding and a proper syringe in the box.
